Stronger together

D: Last week the boys started gymnastics class. It's a small independently owned gym that specializes in teaching the little gymnast. As if the balance beam, rings, parallel bars and the vault needed to be any cooler, this gym has my kids believing they are spaceships on a mission to mars and each piece of equipment a different planet. Needless to say, the boys are in L.O.V.E with gymnastics.

I took them to their first class and observed them as they sat in a straight line of cross-legged children. Each patiently listened to the teacher giving instructions on how to use each piece of equipment. The Duece were so excited about what the teacher was telling them that they were literally bouncing up and down on their seats. At one point, they caught each others glance, smiled brightly, and then ran to each other to embrace in a frantic hug!

And even though they were doing very different activities throughout the class, in different parts of the room, they continued to "check in" with a hug several times through out the class. It was as if sharing their mutual excitement and joy with each other fueled their confidence and enthusiasm. It was an astounding realization as their parent.

I can see how some people might think that this kind of relationship with twins could be a crutch... that maybe there's a chance that each child could depend too heavily on their 'other half' to be there to push them along. But I believe that this special bond that they share will push them to each find their own independent styles and unique talents. It may seem counter-intuitive, but I think the more they are offered the chance to cheer each other on, the stronger each child will stand on their own.

I agree, it is like the mother child bond. The child will push away when it is time to move on to other things. Getting their emotional needs met is a good thing. Learning to share on such an intimate level is also a good thing.
